Ways to Prevent Skin Cancer Before Needing Treatment

skin cancer

Many people lather up in sunscreen before hitting the beach, but UV rays can be harmful year-round. There are more people diagnosed with skin cancer in the United States than with every other type of cancer combined. Knowing this, you can see why it is so important to take preventative measures year-round. Here at Atomic Dermatology, we would like to inform you about how to prevent skin cancer before needing treatment.

Know When the Sun is Strongest

Sunscreen is great, but avoiding harmful UV rays when the sun is at its strongest is better. When this is can vary depending on where you live. The sun’s rays are at their most intense during late spring and in early summer. During these peak times, it is important to seek shade when outdoors. Remember, harmful rays from the sun can reach your skin even on a cloudy, hazy-looking day.

Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer

On top of staying out of the sun, there are several other things you can do to help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

  • Always wear sunscreen when outside
  • Don’t go tanning, either outdoors or in a tanning bed
  • Avoid getting a sunburn
  • Wear long, loose pants and shirts to protect your arms and legs
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to offer your face more protection
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them
  • Keep newborns out of the sun.
  • Do a self-exam once a month to check for changes in your skin
  • Visit your dermatologist every year for a professional skin exam

How to Choose a Sunscreen

Choosing the right sunscreen is important. You want something that is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Ideally, you will apply a minimum of 15 SPF every day. If you know you will be outside for an extended period of time, bump up the SPF to at least 30. If you are going to be getting wet or sweaty, look for something that is water-resistant. Sunscreen should be reapplied once every 2 hours and after swimming.
